OUR FOUNDER

Julia Steuwer believed, all her life, in the value of creative work, curiosity, and exchange. Le Miffre had long been her place of retreat and renewal, and she wanted it to keep serving a purpose beyond her lifetime.

In planning her legacy, she dedicated her home and estate to the creation of the Fonds de Dotation Julia & Georges. Her wish was to open this place to artists, and to give future generations the chance to pursue their work in an environment shaped by openness, generosity, and discovery. The foundation carries that vision forward through its residency in Roussillon.

1965–1995

A career in haute couture

Julia’s first position was at Givenchy — the beginning of a thirty-year career that took her from Paris to Johannesburg to Munich, and back to Paris again.

After Givenchy she worked at Fouks in Paris, then spent two years in Johannesburg at Peter Jay, where she was responsible for creating and presenting collections. Returning to Europe, she joined Queisser Modelle in Munich — a Ted Lapidus licensee — as Director of Style.

In 1973 she moved back to Paris to join Ted Lapidus Diffusion directly, where she ran the style studio for nearly a decade. She led a team of 25, worked under Ted Lapidus himself, and presented collections to the French and international press, with exhibitions in the USA, UK, and Germany.

From 1982 she took on the role of Product Director for YSL Variation at Mendes, part of the Groupe Cligman — a company that produced ready-to-wear for Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, and Cerruti. She defined the YSL Variation line from its launch, working in close collaboration with the house of Yves Saint Laurent on everything from trend direction and fabric selection to the final prototypes.

In 1987, Julia joined Pierre Balmain as Director of Women’s Ready-to-Wear, coordinating the boutique collection and developing its diffusion line. She then spent two years at Caroline Rohmer, overseeing artistic and organisational direction across a production of 350,000 pieces a year.

In 1990, she returned to Balmain — this time as Directrice des Collections. She led the Prêt-à-Porter Femme studio, directed the „Ivoire“ collection originally created by Oscar de la Renta, and created fifteen different collections for twenty-five licensees. It was the culmination of a career built on translating creative vision into clothes that people actually wore.

2022

Fonds De Dotation

After decades of success in the fashion industry, Julia sought a place where she could retreat from the demands of her career and reconnect with her creative spirit. Together with her husband Georges she found that sanctuary in a beautiful, remote home in Roussillon, France. This house became her personal haven, a place where she could relax, find inspiration, and rejuvenate.

Julia had always dreamed of sharing this special place with others, particularly artists who, like her, needed a peaceful environment to focus on their work. Before her passing, Julia made plans to turn her beloved home into a foundation that would support artists from around the world. In her will, she dedicated her fortune to the establishment of the Julia & Georges Fonds de Dotation (named after her and her husband), ensuring that her vision would live on.

Today, the Julia & Georges Fonds de Dotation honors Julia Steuwer’s legacy by offering a serene and inspiring retreat for artists. The foundation provides residencies for collaborative groups, allowing them to immerse themselves in their creative projects in the same tranquil setting that Julia cherished. Through this foundation, Julia’s passion for creativity, collaboration, and inspiration continues to touch the lives of artists and the broader cultural community.
